Kevin Lynch Promoted to Ball State Football’s Offensive Coordinator
January 16, 2020 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – The baton has been passed from one Lynch to another. Ball State football head coach Mike Neu announced today that assistant coach Kevin Lynch has been promoted to offensive coordinator. He will also retain his duties as running backs coach.
Lynch is entering his fifth season on the Ball State coaching staff. He was the running backs coach for each of the last four years and recruiting coordinator since 2018. Lynch will be replacing his older brother, Joey Lynch, who recently accepted the offensive coordinator position at Colorado State.
This past fall, running back Caleb Huntley racked up 1,275 rushing yards which ranked fifth on the Ball State single-season chart. Huntley went on to earn second team all-league accolades. In 2016, Ball State's offense averaged 220 rushing yards per game, its highest average since 1978.
Lynch began his coaching career at Indiana in 2009 as an offensive quality control coach. He then went on to work six years as the wide receivers coach at Division II University of Indianapolis. He was an integral part of one of the most successful eras in UIndy history, helping the Greyhounds to 39 wins, four conference championships and three NCAA Division II playoff appearances in a four-year stretch.
He played collegiate football at nearby Franklin College, where he was a three-year starter and all-conference wide receiver. Lynch earned his bachelor's degree from Franklin College in 2009.
Ball State's offense was arguably the best in the Mid-American Conference in 2019. The Cardinals led the league in both scoring (34.8 points per game) and total offense (463.0 yards per game). Ball State fielded a balanced offense as it ranked among the top four MAC teams in rushing (4th – 219.4 ypg) and passing (3rd – 243.6 ypg).
Ball State concluded the 2019 season 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the MAC. The Cardinals won the Bronze Stalk Trophy from Northern Illinois for the first time since 2008 and capped the year by knocking off league champion Miami for the Red Bird Rivalry Trophy, 41-27.
Ball State opens the 2020 season on Thursday, Sept. 3 with a home game against Maine.
