Track & Field Earns 18 Top 10s Saturday at Gene Edmonds Invite

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - Senior thrower Kelsey Walters opened the final day of the Gene Edmonds Memorial Invite with a third-place finish in the shot put to spark another strong showing for the Ball State indoor track & field team Saturday at Purdue's Lambert Fieldhouse.
Walters' toss of 14.09m was the first of 18 top 10 finishes for the Cardinals on the day, and one of 22 for the team over the course of the two-day meet.
Ball State's best individual finish of the afternoon came from junior sprinter Dejah Johnson, who took second in the 400m dash with a career-fast time of 57.48. The Cardinals also received a fifth-place showing from senior Amber Jones (57.81) and a sixth-place effort from junior MaQuila Norman (58.04) in the event.
Also earning individual third-place finishes for Ball State on Saturday were junior Anasja Troutman in the 60m hurdles (8.73) and redshirt sophomore Madison Kiser in the 800m (2:20.49). Troutman's time was a career-best, as was her effort of 26.75 in the 200m.
The day also saw the Cardinals post a pair of solid finishes in the distance events, with freshman Juliana Stogsdill placing fourth in the mile in a career-fast 5:09.86 and senior Maritza Rodriguez crossing the finish line in fourth in the 3000m at 10:04.91.
Ball State closed the day with a third-place time of 3:53.88 in the 4x400m relay, which was led off by Jones, followed by Johnson, Kiser and Norman.
Overall, the Cardinals secured eight career-best performances Saturday, while earning 13 over the course of the competition.
Up next for the Ball State track & field program, the two-day Gladstein Invitational hosted by Indiana which begins Jan. 24 at IU's Gladstein Fieldhouse.
