DALLAS -- CJ Jones carded a 1-under par 70 to lead the Ball State men's golf team in Sunday's opening round at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
The Cardinals spent most of the day near the top of the leaderboard, tying third-ranked Arizona State for second place early on the back nine, before giving some shots back coming home. Still, they are in the thick of it, tied for seventh place and eight shots off the lead after a round of 287 (+3).
The Sun Devils and host SMU are tied for first. Ball State was paired with those teams Sunday. This week's 17-team field features seven squads that played in NCAA Regionals last spring.
Jones' 70 has him inside the top 10 with two rounds left to play at Trinity Forest Golf Club, site of the PGA Tour's AT&T Byron Nelson Invitational.
The Cardinals also counted a pair of 72's from Joey Ranieri and Keegan Bronnenberg, who are tied for 25th, and a 73 from Yianni Kostouros. Arizona State's Alex del Ray holds the individual lead after an opening 67.
The second of the tournament's three rounds will be played Monday. The Cardinals are paired with Rice and UTSA.
