Hawkins-Dabney’s Goal Pushes Ball State Past Illinois State
August 29, 2019 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – After 83 scoreless minutes, Tatiana Hawkins-Dabney netted a late goal to give the Ball State soccer team a thrilling 1-0 win over Illinois State Thursday night at Briner Sports Complex.
The win pushed Ball State to 3-0-0 on the season while Illinois State fell to 1-2-0. The Cardinals also extended their program best unbeaten streak to 14 matches.
"This a resilient group," said BSU head coach Josh Rife. "Credit to the girls, they battled hard today and this win was a testament to how hard they've worked. Teams that know how to win just find ways to do it. This team has a lot of belief, and they figured out how to get a difficult win against a good opponent."
Ball State tallied 10 shots on the night with five on goal while Illinois State had three shots on goal from seven total shots. The Cardinal attack earned nine corner kicks throughout the match and the defense conceded only one. Tristin Stuteville saved every shot she faced to stay perfect on the year with three clean sheets in as many contests.
Both the Cardinals and Redbirds created excellent chances throughout the entirety of the match, but both defenses and keepers held their ground to keep the match scoreless. Finally, in the 84th minute, Claudia Como passed a ball down the right side and connected with Hawkins-Dabney. Hawkins-Dabney dribbled to the top-right corner of the penalty area and drilled a high shot off the outstretched fingers of the keeper and into the back of the net for the game winner.
"We saw against Eastern Illinois that in one-on-one situations, Tatiana (Hawkins-Dabney) is capable of creating some magic like that," Rife said. "Credit to her on a great individual effort."
Ball State now takes its three-game winning streak into another home match on Sunday against Loyola. First touch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET with live streaming available via BallStateSports.com/watch and radio play-by-play on 102.9 FM and 1340 AM.
