WVB Gains Valuable Experience at Purdue Fort Wayne
August 24, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball took advantage of its time on Arnie Ball Court Saturday afternoon at the Gates Sports Center, going five sets in a hard-fought exhibition matchup against Purdue Fort Wayne.

While the Cardinals suffered a 3-2 setback in the final tally, Ball State was able to rally from two sets down to force a deciding fifth frame. More importantly, the squad was able to experiment with several different lineups and get a majority of its nine-member freshman class some valuable on-court experience.
Â
"I'm pretty pleased with how everyone did today," head coach Kelli Miller Phillips said. "It was nice to see a couple different lineups. We've got so many new people, at times we had four and five freshmen out there, so it's going to take a minute for them to get comfortable. By the end of the match, they looked like they knew what they were doing and were seasoned veterans. Overall, it was really good for us to get some of the kinks out going into next weekend."
Â
In total, 14 different Cardinals saw action in Saturday's exhibition, including seven newcomers. Ball State had 10 players register at least one kill against the Mastodons, while 11 players tallied at least one dig.
Â
"The best thing about what I saw today was a lot of depth and a lot of positive things from several different people," Miller said. "We played how I expected for this time of year. If we're looking great and everything was rolling, that would be a complete surprise. When you've got nine freshman and it's their first time out in a college match you're going to have some ups and downs. Overall, I couldn't be happier with how they competed, how they came to play from start to finish."
Â
The Ball State women's volleyball team officially opens the 2019 season Friday (Aug. 30) with a pair of matches in the Ball State Tournament. First up is UAB at 10 a.m., followed by USF at 7 p.m.
