MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State University divers spent Thursday and Friday at the USA Diving Senior National Qualifiers with Rachel Bertram leading the way by qualifying for next week's championship field on the 3m.
Bertram scored a 245.5 Friday to secure her spot in the finals in Indianapolis on Friday, May 24, with an eighth place finish. She also finished 23rd on the 1m with a score of 195.75. On the men's side, Hunter Ongay competed in both the 1 and 3m. He tallied a 195.85 on the 3m which placed him in 37th and followed by putting up a 204.00 on the 1m for 29th. Ongay will move on to compete in the 1m finals on Wednesday, May 22.
"I was really pleased with our performances this week," said diving coach Nick Gayes. "Caitlin had a solid showing on 1m and gained some really valuable experience. Hunter stepped up his list and learned some new dives and competed them for the first time, so he is setting himself up nicely for next season. Rachel was really close to getting through on 1m and then had a fantastic list on 3m to advance from a really talented field. We will get back to work this week and be ready for Friday and an even tougher slate of divers."
Joining Bertram and Ongay was Caitlin Locante who scored a 176.05 on the 1m, which landed her in 36th.
There were 14 qualifying spots up for grabs on he women's 3m and 20 on the 1m. The men had 26 spots on the 1m and 18 on the 3m.
