MUNCIE, Ind. – Bryeana Byrdsong came within one-hundredth of a second of sweeping the 100 and 200 meters Saturday, leading Ball State to its highest point total at the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in a decade. For her performance, she was named the Most Valuable Performer of the championships.
Byrdsong won the 100m in a time of 11.51 which would have been both a MAC Championship meet and University Track record were it not for wind readings that were too high. The junior from Indianapolis then ran a PR of 23.53 in the 200m and was barely edged by Kent State's Nicole Yeargin.
Byrdsong also helped the Cardinals to a second-place finish in the 4x100 meter relay and a third-place result in the 4x400. She teamed with Peyton Stewart, Ivy McKee and Jasmine Harris in the 4x100 to break the school record with a time of 45.20, finishing less than two-tenths behind Eastern Michigan.
The success in the sprints helped Ball State rack up 49 points Saturday to run its total to 57 for the championship, its highest mark since 2009. The Cardinals finished ninth as a team over the three days at the Briner Sports Complex.
Fourth-place finishes from Norman in the 400m and freshman Karleigh Connor in the 800m also aided Saturday's effort.
Norman outperformed her No. 8 seed entering the championships and after the prelims. Her time of 53.94 was the second-best individual mark in program history, nearly a second and a half faster than her previous best.
Norman was also the anchor leg of the 4x400 team and surged the Cardinals to third place on the home stretch. She teamed with Amber Jones, Dejah Johnson and Byrdsong to run it in a time of 3:43.65 which ranks fifth all-time in program history.
The Cardinals lost a chance for more points in the running events when Harris had to be scratched from the 200m and 100m hurdles finals. Harris, the last leg of Ball State's second-place 4x100 team, unfortunately pulled up with an injury as she crossed the finish line.
In the field events, 2018 Second Team All-American Regan Lewis scored for the Cardinals with a fourth-place finish in the high jump. Lewis, who has been limited all year by a foot injury, jumped 1.66m but could not add to her career MAC Championship tally which includes two titles in the outdoor high jump and two in the indoor.
Princess Carter was the other Cardinal competing in Saturday's field events and finished just outside of the points in the discus. Her throw of 47.18m was more than a full meter farther than her previous best and gave her the third-best individual mark in program history.
