Cardinals boast Sportsmanship Award Winner, Freshman of the Year, All-Tournament honoree
AURORA, Ohio -- The Ball State men's golf team didn't have the finish it wanted at this week's rain-shortened MAC Championships, but the Cardinals did take home some hardware from the annual postseason awards ceremony.
Â
Timothy Wiseman was recognized with the league's Earl Yestingsmeier Sportsmanship Award, Joey Ranieri was tabbed Freshman of the Year, and CJ Jones earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Â
Wiseman is the fifth Ball State golfer and second in the past five years (McCormick Clouser, 2015) to win the Sportsmanship Award named in honor of Earl Yestingsmeier, the long-time BSU coach who would have turned 86 this week. The award goes to a senior based on votes from the league's golfers. The 2018 U.S. Open qualifier from Corydon, Indiana, led the Cardinals this year with a 73.00 scoring average that ranks just outside the top 5 in program history.
Â
Ranieri became just the second Cardinals golfer to be named Freshman of the Year and the first since Tyler Merkel in 2011. His 73.70 scoring average broke Merkel's BSU freshman record of 74.00. The Zionsville, Indiana, product posted four top-25 finishes for the year and racked up four rounds in the 60's this spring.
Â
Jones tied for third at the MAC Championships. He carded an even-par total of 144 over the event's 36 holes, including a 2-under 70 in the second round. The top five players on the final leaderboard earned all-tournament honors. The Frankfort, Kentucky, native finished the year with a scoring average of 73.95, giving the Cardinals four golfers better than 74.

The All-MAC teams will be announced Thursday.
