Three Cardinals Receive All-MIVA Recognition
April 11, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association announced its regular season awards Thursday and three members of the Ball State men's volleyball team appeared on the various teams.
Matt Szews was named to the All-MIVA First Team while Parker Swartz made the second team. Kaleb Jenness was also recognized on the all-freshman team.
"Volleyball is truly a team sport," said head coach Joel Walton. "That being said, you have to have team success in order to earn these individual awards and recognition. I'm proud of these young men for how they represent our program and the consistent energy they bring each day. Hopefully they can earn a few more awards in the MIVA Tournament before our season is done."
Szews had another stellar season for the Cardinals as he inched closer to breaking several all-time records at Ball State. The junior finished the season second in the MIVA and first at Ball State in kills with a total of 361. The Wisconsin native also compiled 174 digs, 74 blocks, 37 service aces and 21 assists. This marks Szews' second time as an All-MIVA First Team honoree, as he received the honor as a freshman. He was also named to the all-freshman team that year.
Swartz likewise had a big year for BSU with his second-team honors. The senior played a team-high 110 sets this season. During those sets, he tallied 143 kills on an impressive hitting percentage of .473. Swartz was second on the team in blocks with 77 and also added 49 digs, 24 aces and 10 assists.
In his debut season at Ball State, Jenness turned in a solid freshman year before going out with a season-ending hand injury. The South Carolina native finished third on the team in kills with 184 while hitting .220. He also racked up 76 digs, 35 blocks, 13 aces and 15 assists. Jenness is the first Division I men's volleyball player ever from the state of South Carolina.
