March 04, 2019 | Men's Tennis
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Ball State men's tennis team wrapped up its spring break action in California Monday with a doubleheader. The Cardinals (3-4) won their first match 5-2 over Villanova and then lost by the same score to the University of California San Diego.
Ball State managed to secure the doubles point over Villanova after the No. 3 twosome of Chris Adams and Conner Andersen clinched the first point of the day with their 6-4 defeat over the Wildcats' Dylan Flanagan and Charlie Schuls. The Cardinals also took the top two courts from Villanova as well to sweep doubles action.
In singles play against the Wildcats, Nemanja Guzina pushed the Cardinals lead to 2-0 after his straight set take down at the No. 2 position over Tyler Roth. Villanova made it a 2-1 competition after taking court five from BSU. Adams came through to make the score 3-1 and then Andersen claimed match point for Ball State with his three set thriller over Tommy Mulfur, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot.
After that, Ball State fell in its evening match to UC San Diego by a score of 5-2. Unfortunately, the Cardinals dropped the doubles point to the Tritons. Despite losing the doubles point, Thibault De Negri alongside partner Tom Carney did win their match on court two, 6-3.
UC San Diego would then take four of the six singles matches from Ball State to seal the victory.
The Ball State men's tennis team returns home this weekend for two matches on Friday against IU Southeast at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The Cardinals will then host Taylor University for their second doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. BSU will close the three day weekend event Sunday at 1 p.m. against Eastern Illinois. All matches will be played at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
