Moritz’s Banner Day, Low Opening Round Put Cardinals in Good Position
March 12, 2019 | Women's Golf
Ball State’s round-one score at Spring Break Shootout was just one off school record
DADE CITY, Fla. -- The Ball State women's golf team fired a pair of sub-300 scores Monday, including a round just one stroke off the school record, to put itself in position for a good finish at the Spring Break Shootout.
The Cardinals, led by freshman Hadley Moritz at 2 under par, are tied for sixth out of 15 teams with a 36-hole total of 585 (+17). Troy (+3) holds a slim lead over tournament co-hosts Florida Gulf Coast (+4) and Western Kentucky (+5) with one round remaining at Lake Jovita Golf Club.
Paced by rounds of 2-under 69 from Moritz and Manon Tounalom, Ball State opened with a morning round of 290 (+6), nearly matching the program record. The Cardinals have twice recorded rounds of 289 -- the 2010 UNLV Invitational and the 2013 Hoosier Fall Invitational.
Moritz's 69 was five shots better than any of the previous 16 rounds in her rookie season. She followed it with an even-par 71 in the afternoon and sits in a tie for fifth place, just three shots behind tournament leader Ailsa Clark of FGCU.
Tounalom is tied for 15th at 2 over par after carding a 75 in the afternoon. Her first-round 69 marked her lowest score since firing a 68 two years ago as a freshman at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Hawaii.
Liz Kim aided the Cardinals' with a 74 in round one, while Emily Knouff's 74 and Morgan Lewis' 75 in the afternoon solidified the second-round score.
While Moritz stole the show Monday, three other BSU freshmen – all competing as individuals – carded their best rounds of the season, too.
Dylann Armstrong fired a 72 in the opening round and finished third-best among all Ball State golfers on the day in a tie for 31st at 6 over par. Ja Santadusit's morning 75 and Elizabeth Amendola's afternoon 74 were also season bests.
The third and final round of the Spring Break Shootout is slated for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday. Live scoring is available at birdiefire.com.
