Softball’s Rally Falls Short at USF
March 01, 2019 | Softball
TAMPA, Fla.- - There was not quit in the Ball State softball team Friday evening, as they brought the tying run to the plate before ultimately falling short in a 5-2 loss to USF to close the opening day of the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreational Invitational.
The Cardinals (11-7), who opened the day with a 15-1 loss to 13th-ranked South Carolina, found themselves trailing the tournament host Bulls (10-8) 5-0 heading into the seventh inning of the nightcap.
However, senior slugger Janae Hogg provided a big spark to open the frame, blasting her sixth home run of the season over the fence in left field.
Two outs later, freshman speedster Kim Manuel kept the game alive by beating out a bunt single. It was nearly the biggest momentum play of the game, as senior catcher Olivia Huffman followed with a walk and freshman second baseman Amaia Daniel drove her home with an RBI single to left-center.
Unfortunately, that was the final run for Ball State as a strikeout ended the game.
Manuel also provided a spark for the Cardinals in the loss to the nationally-ranked Gamecocks (14-2) with what else, but a bunt single in the top of the third. She would advance to second on a SC error on the play, move to third on a fly out and score BSU's lone run on a wild pitch.
The Ball State softball team continues play in the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreational Invitational Saturday with games versus Penn (10 a.m.) and Furman (3 p.m.).
