Men’s Tennis Falls Victim to Cleveland State’s Winning Streak
February 22, 2019 | Men's Tennis
CLEVELAND -- The Ball State men's tennis team won the doubles point Friday, but Cleveland State claimed the first five singles matches off the court on the way to a 5-2 victory.
The Vikings won their fifth straight match to improve to 7-4, while the Cardinals dropped to 2-5 against a challenging early-season schedule.
Ball State jumped on the board early behind doubles wins from the tandems of Tom Carney/Danilo Kovacevic and Chris Adams/Conner Andersen.
But the Cardinals couldn't carry that momentum into singles action. Nemanja Guzina provided BSU's second point of the day, emerging from a three-set battle with Matthew Terry at No. 2 singles, but not until the outcome of the team match had already been determined.
Guzina was up a set and a break before seeing Terry storm back to force a third set, but he regrouped and pulled out the deciding set in a tiebreaker for a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 win.
His twin brother Marko Guzina nearly forced his match to a third set, but he came up short in a second-set tiebreaker to Nico Mostardi at the No. 1 position. Chris Adams also lost one of his sets in a tiebreaker, while Thibault de Negri dropped a pair of 6-4 sets.
Ball State returns to action next week with a west coast trip. The Cardinals face Pepperdine on Thursday and then compete over the weekend in the Pacific Coast Doubles in La Jolla, California.
