Ball State sees three-game winning streak snapped
OXFORD, Ohio -- The Ball State men's basketball team cut a 14-point Miami lead to one with 29 seconds remaining but came up just short in a 69-66 loss Tuesday at Millett Hall.
The Cardinals (14-12, 5-8 MAC) saw their three-game winning streak snapped, as the RedHawks (14-12, 6-7 MAC) earned a sweep of the season series between the teams.
Ball State suffered through an off-night shooting, hovering in the low 30-percent range for most of the game before seeing some shots fall during its late rally.
The Cardinals trailed 62-48 with 7:27 to go before scoring 11 straight points, capped by a Brachen Hazen dunk. BSU later cut the deficit to one at 65-64 after a pair of Tayler Persons free throws with 29 seconds left.
With Ball State forced to foul, the teams traded scores until Miami led 69-66 with 3 seconds to go. The Cardinals drew up a play and got the ball to Persons, whose 3-pointer as time expired was just off the mark.
Persons led Ball State with 16 points, while K.J. Walton added 11. Hazen finished with nine points off the bench, while Trey Moses and Austin Nehls had eight each.
"I liked our resilience," Ball State head coach James Whitford said. "We had a lot of things going against us. We were missing free throws, missing shots. But we really hung in there. I thought we fought. I thought our bench really helped us, and I thought Brachen, in particular, gave us great life."
Nike Sibande led Miami with 17 points and hit some challenged 3-pointers for a RedHawks squad that started 7-or-15 from beyond the arc before cooling off late.
Tuesday's game was Ball State's eighth MAC contest to be decided in the final minute.
Ball State will return home to close out the month of February with two home games. The Cardinals welcome Central Michigan for a 2 p.m. tipoff Saturday on "Hoosieroons and Hoops Day" at Worthen Arena.
It's the first game of a doubleheader that will see both the men's and women's teams wearing "Hoosieroons" jerseys as part of Ball State's Centennial Celebration, harkening back to the 1920's and BSU's days as the Indiana Normal School Eastern Division Hoosieroons.
