No. 22 Washington Pulls Away from BSU in Diamond Head Opener
December 23, 2019 | Men's Basketball
Cardinals will play Monday at 8:30 p.m. HT (1:30 a.m. ET Tuesday) on ESPNU
HONOLULU -- Ball State had moments early and made some runs at No. 22 Washington, but a pair of projected NBA first-round picks helped a hot-shooting Huskies team pull away for an 85-64 win on the opening day of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic.
Â
Jaden McDaniels scored a game-high 22 points for Washington, while fellow freshman Isaiah Stewart scored 19 and grabbed 10 rebounds. Both were top-10 national recruits, and both are potential lottery picks next summer.
Â
Tahjai Teague led Ball State with 20 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. The Cardinals (6-5) were within three points with just over 15 minutes to play and were down only 10 after a Luke Bumbalough 3-pointer with 6:35 left, but Washington (9-2) finished strong and BSU couldn't catch up at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Â
"They shot the ball very well early," Ball State head coach James Whitford said. "In the second half, we didn't handle the moments in the game that got hard with enough composure."
Â
Ball State now moves into the consolation bracket to play Monday at 8:30 p.m. HT (1:30 a.m. ET Tuesday) against UTEP on ESPNU. Host Hawaii rallied past the Miners in the final game of the opening day.
Â
BSU, and especially Ishmael El-Amin, shot the ball well early against Washington's zone defense. El-Amin hit his first four shots from the floor, including three of them from 3-point range. The Cardinals shot it so well that Washington abandoned its typical zone for exclusively man-to-man defense the rest of the way.
Â
That paid off as the Cardinals cooled off down the stretch and finished at 39 percent shooting and 7-of-24 from 3 for the game. Stewart, the UW big man, had as much of an impact in that regard as he had on the offensive end for Washington.
Â
"It's not the fact they played man-to-man that was hard," Whitford said. "The thing that's unusual about them is they have a center in Isaiah Stewart who can switch pick-and-rolls and guard your point guard at a really high level. He's such a unique defender. They took us out of a lot of stuff because of that."
Â
Still, Ball State rallied from 13 down late in the first half to trim the deficit to 52-49 with 15:25 to play. But Washington answered with an 8-0 run, and the defending Pac-12 regular season champions controlled the action the rest of the way.
Â
El-Amin finished with 13 points, while Jarron Coleman added 11 for the Cardinals.
Â
Quade Green scored 21 points for Washington, as the trio of Green, McDaniels and Stewart combined for 62 of the Huskies' points.
