Joey Lynch Among Select Assistant Football Coaches Nominated for Broyles Award
November 14, 2019 | Football
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Ball State football assistant head coach Joey Lynch has turned the Cardinals offense into one of the best in the Mid-American Conference this season. His hard work has been noticed by the Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation, which announced Lynch as one of the candidates for the 2019 Broyles Award on Wednesday. The award honors college football's top assistant coaches.
Lynch, now in his 11th year on the Ball State coaching staff, has the Cardinals offense putting up impressive numbers. Ball State ranks second in the MAC in scoring at 32.8 points per game. If the Cardinals continue at that pace, it will be their highest average since 2013. Ball State also ranks among the top four in the conference in rushing offense (201.2 yards per game), pass efficiency (143.5) and total offense (437.9 ypg).
Lynch played quarterback for the Cardinals from 2003-06 and then joined the coaching staff in 2009. During his tenure at Ball State, Lynch has served as wide receivers coach, tight ends coach, recruiting coordinator, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. He has held the offensive coordinator role since 2014 and added the assistant head coach title this year.
The 41 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 130 Division I programs across the country. Lynch was one of only two MAC assistant coaches nominated for this award.
A 20-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) will select 15 semi-finalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner. Those finalists will be invited to travel to Little Rock, Arkansas, where the 2019 Broyles Award winner will be announced on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at the Marriott Hotel.

The Cardinals (4-5, 3-2 MAC) host Central Michigan (6-4, 4-2) in a pivotal MAC West showdown this Saturday, Nov. 16. Game time on CBS Sports Network is set for 3:30 p.m.
