Malik Dunner Runs Away with MAC Special Teams Player of the Week Honors
November 11, 2019 | Football
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ball State football kick returner Malik Dunner was honored by the Mid-American Conference Monday as the West Division Special Teams Player of the Week following his big-play performance against Western Michigan.
Dunner, a senior from Carpentersville, Illinois, jumpstarted the Cardinals at the beginning of the second half versus WMU. With Ball State trailing 21-10, Dunner returned the half's opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. Ball State eventually took the lead from the Broncos twice in the fourth quarter before falling in an exciting finish, 35-31.
That was the first kick return for a score by a MAC player this fall. It was the fourth 100-yard kick return for a touchdown in Ball State history and the first since Dante Love accomplished the feat against Central Michigan in 2007. Dunner also returned a kick 93 yards for a touchdown in 2017 against UAB.
Dunner has scored four times this year – two rushing touchdowns, one receiving and one kick return. He leads all active Cardinals with 20 career touchdowns.
The Cardinals (4-5, 3-2 MAC) host Central Michigan (6-4, 4-2) in a pivotal MAC West showdown this Saturday, Nov. 16. Game time on CBS Sports Network is set for 3:30 p.m.
