October 26, 2019 | Football
FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. – The Wuerffel Trophy, presented by the Chick-fil-A Foundation, announced on Friday that Ball State senior wide receiver Riley Miller was one of a few select players from across the country nominated for the 2019 national college football award that recognizes community service.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually to the Football Bowl Subdivision player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, Danny Wuerffel, from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy has honored more than 1,200 nominees since its inception in 2005.
Miller was one of seven players nominated from the Mid-American Conference. The local product out of Yorktown, Indiana, scored twice in last week's dominating 52-14 win over Toledo. He has started 28 consecutive games for the Cardinals. This year, Miller ranks sixth in the league in receiving yards per game (61.4) and seventh in receptions per game (4.3).
In the classroom, Miller has earned a spot on Ball State's Dean List six times. He was named to the Academic All-MAC team in both 2017 and 2018. The exercise science major currently carries a 3.643 GPA.
Miller has been one of the team leaders in the community as well. He has been a guest speaker at the Yorktown Kids Football Camp, volunteered for trash pick-up along a major road leading into Ball State, served as an emcee at Yorktown High School's Riley Dance Marathon and participated in 'Team IMPACT' events several times in 2018.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 5 and finalists announced on Nov. 18. The formal announcement of the 2019 Wuerffel Trophy recipient is scheduled to be made on Dec. 10, 2019 at the National Football Foundation's festivities in New York City.
The 2019 Wuerffel Trophy winner will be invited to attend The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU and ESPN3 on Dec. 12, airing at 6 p.m., featuring interviews with award winners and finalists as they approach The Home Depot College Football Awards Show, the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame and Chick-fil-A Fan Experience in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The presentation of the 2019 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 51st Annual All Sports Association Awards Banquet on Feb. 7, 2020 in Fort Walton Beach.
Last year's winner was Drue Tranquill from the University of Notre Dame.
