Three Home Meets Highlight 2019-20 Track & Field Schedule
October 25, 2019 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Not one … Not two … But three home meets highlight the 2019-20 Ball State track & field schedule as announced by fifth-year head coach Brian Etelman.
During the indoor season, the Cardinals will host the Ball State Tune-Up in the newly renovated Ball State Field Sports Building on Feb. 21. When the schedule moves to the outdoor season, the Cardinals welcome teams to University Track at the Briner Sports Complex for the Ball State Challenge (April 11) and the Ball State Tune-Up (May 8).
Coming off the program's best finish at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships since the 2009 season, the Cardinals look to continue their upwards trajectory under Etelman starting Saturday, Dec. 7 when the indoor season commences with the Mastodon Opener hosted by Purdue Fort Wayne.
In his first four seasons at the helm, Etelman has trained Ball State's first All-American (Regan Lewis in the 2018 Outdoor High Jump) and first MAC Outdoor Championship Most Valuable Performer (Bryeana Byrdsong in 2019) since the 2007 season. In addition, his student-athletes have won eight MAC individual championships and established four program records.
After the holiday break and the start of the new year, the Cardinals resume both the indoor season and their chase for more records and medals with the Gene Edmonds Invite (Jan. 10-11, 2020) hosted by Purdue.
The Gladstein Invitational (Jan. 24-25) hosted by Indiana is next, followed by a split squad weekend with some student-athletes going to the Meyo Invitational (Feb. 7-8) hosted by Notre Dame and others to the Akron Invitational (Feb. 7-8). The final road meet of the indoor regular season will be the Music City Challenge (Feb. 14-15) hosted by Vanderbilt.
Ball State's first home meet, the Ball State Tune-Up (Feb. 21), is aptly named as it's the final tune-up for the 2020 MAC Indoor Championships (Feb. 28-29) hosted by Akron. The NCAA Indoor Championships (March 13-14) follow two weeks later in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Cardinals open the 2020 outdoor season with a fifth consecutive appearance in the Stan Lyons Invitational (March 21) hosted by Butler. Following two more road meets, the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays (March 25-28) hosted by Texas and the Oliver Nikoloff (April 3-4) hosted by Cincinnati, Ball State will host its first of two outdoor meets, the Ball State Challenge (April 11).
The Cardinals will split again for the first to two consecutive road weekends with the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational (April 24-25) hosted by Louisville and the Jesse Owens Classic (April 24-25) at Ohio State. Following the Black and Gold Invitational (May 1-2) at Vanderbilt, the Cardinals wrap up the regular season by hosting the Ball State Tune-Up (May 8).
All the action culminates the following weekend at the MAC Outdoor Championships (May 14-16) hosted by Western Michigan.
Ball State will also look to send participants to the NCAA East Preliminary Championships (May 28-30) for the fourth consecutive season, although this time it will be a little closer to home in Lexington, Kentucky. The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships (June 10-13) cap the season in Austin, Texas.
