Menzione on floor, Volpe on beam the best scores of the night
YPSILANTI, Mich. - A strong overall team vault performance and standout routines on bars, floor and beam highlighted Ball State's Thursday night in a dual meet at Eastern Michigan.
Jordyn Penny's first-place beam effort (9.825) was the team's highest score of the night. Kaitlyn Menzione (floor) and Lauren Volpe (beam) both landed 9.800. Ball State controlled the night in vault, going second through sixth place. Vault, likely the team's strongest rotation, saw Sydney Finke, Marissa Nychyk, Arden Hudson and Stephanie Schweikert all rate at 9.750. See the entire team's vault by clicking below:
The Cardinals' 48.725 mark on vault was the team's best score of the season.Â
"We stuck our landings and looked pretty good in the air. It was a solid performance, we were excited," head coach Joanna Saleem said.
Saleem noted the difference in this meet's cadence for the young Cardinals, being that it was the year's first dual meet. The coach said, "flipping it to the dual meet format is a littler bit of a different pace."Â The Cardinals needed to make equipment adjustments throughout the night,
Volpe, who Saleem said is "doing an awesome job," attributed her success on the beam to slowing down and feeding off her teammates.
"It was a good feeling landing that and seeing all my teammates excited," Volpe said. "We've been focusing on my breathing, which I didn't do in club, and not rushing through my routine. After each skill, I take a deep breath. If one skill doesn't go the way I want it to, I take a deep breath and finish the routine.
"I thought we did a good job sticking together. We had a few things here and there we didn't want to happen, but we had each other's back and finished."
The final dual scoring saw EMU edge the Cards 194.125 - 192.875.Â
