Five Cards go 9.800 or better on vault in home opener
MUNCIE - Ball State started its home opener in the best way possible, posting a team school record effort on the vault en route to a dual meet win over Western Michigan on Sunday.Â
All six vault performances were 9.775 or better, as BSU totaled the record of 49.175. Marissa Nychyk and Stephanie Schweikert, a pair of freshmen competing in Worthen Arena for the first time, both landed 9.875 on vault.
"We wanted to come out and do solid gymnastics, and we knew if we did that we would be able to beat Western," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "Breaking the school record was the icing on the cake for that."

Maddie MacDonald scored 9.825 and seniors Sydney Finke and Jordyn Penny were both 9.800 on vault, as BSU took places 1-6 in the event.Â
Penny, as is often the case, had a standout day. The fifth-year senior was a top-four placer in all three of her events and was 9.800 or better in every routine. Her 9.875 on the beam was a key part of pulling out the meet victory, and Penny's steady performances continue to lift the Cardinals.
"Having such a young team, we have some mistakes here and there. But she covers them," Saleem said. "I was excited about her performance today."
Finke's 9.825 performance was the day's best on the floor, followed by Nychyk at 9.775.
Ball State won the team scoring 194.475 - 193.400.
"It was neck-and-neck there for a while, and definitely competitive," Saleem said. "We had mistakes but we stayed strong through the last routine and that's what gave us the edge at the very end. We have such a young group of women who are doing awesome and we're going to go back in the gym and keep building on this and keep working on refining what we do."
