Jazmin Smith's MAC Auto Mark Leads T&F at Jim Green Invite
January 12, 2019 | Track & Field
LEXINGTON, Ky. - - Led by a Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying mark in the 60m hurdles by senior Jazmin Smith, the Ball State track & field team turned in a solid effort Saturday to close competition in the Jim Green Invitational hosted by Kentucky.
Facing a lot of tough competition, including two of the nation's top 50 runners, Smith earned a spot in the finals with a prelim time of 8.60. She went on to take fifth overall by improving her time in the finals to a season-best effort of 8.50. Both times were good enough to be MAC Indoor Championship automatic qualifying marks, with her finals time currently leading the league.
"Jazmin had an amazing weekend," head coach Brian Etelman said. "She is now the MAC leader in the 60m hurdles with an incredible time of 8.50. That is the fastest she has run in the month of January and is a big accomplishment for her."
The Cardinals received another top 10 effort from senior Peyton Stewart who captured seventh in the 60m dash with a finals time of 7.60, which is also a MAC Championship auto mark. However, it's not as fast as her time of 7.52 opening weekend which led in the league entering the weekend.
"Peyton also had a good race today," Etelman said. "She still has some work to do, but she did very well this weekend. When she gets all the pieces put together, she is going to do something really special."
Freshman Karleigh Conner nearly grabbed another individual top 10 for Ball State, taking 11th in the 800m dash with a career-best effort of 2:16.88. Conner's time is the fastest for the Cardinals in the 800m since the 2017 MAC Championships and currently ranks in the top three in the league.
One more highlight for the Cardinals came late Friday, when the distance medley relay of sophomore Emmalyne Tarsa, Conner, junior Bryeana Byrdsong and junior Peyton Kneadler turned in a time of 12:16.75. It was Ball State's third-fastest DMR in the past seven seasons (2012-13 to present), the top time in the MAC as of last night and would have placed in the top 10 at last season's MAC Indoor Championships.
"Overall, I was impressed with how we did compared to opening weekend," Etelman said. "I was especially pleased with our distance group, they had a weekend to be proud of. There are still a lot of things to work on, and it still early in the season, but I feel we are moving in the right direction and will be ready by the MAC Championships."
The Cardinals finished the meet with three top 10 finishes, 13 top 20 finishes and eight career-best performances against a highly-competitive field which featured a pair of top 20 teams, league rivals Akron and Miami, as well as four other programs from the state of Indiana.
"Our next step is really focusing on having the team more prepared and working to be a great all around as opposed to individually," Etelman concluded. "Being good as a team is extremely important and we need to focus on being a great team as opposed to great individuals."
The Ball State track & field team continues the indoor season next weekend when it heads to the two-day Vanderbilt Invitational which opens Friday (Jan. 18) and concludes Saturday (Jan. 19).
