Cardinals tied for ninth with UCLA after opening round at Golfweek Conference Challenge
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Keegan Bronnenberg fired a 3-under-par 69 in his Ball State debut to lead the Cardinals men's golf team Sunday in the opening round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
The Muncie native, who transferred home and sat out last season, paced Ball State to a score of 293 (+5) as a team in the first round of the year. Timothy Wiseman, the team's lone senior, carded a 74, while Jack Cunningham, CJ Jones and Yianni Kostouros all shot 75. Kostouros, a freshman, also made his debut.
The Cardinals are tied for ninth place with UCLA among 16 teams with two rounds still to play. The Bruins are the highest ranked team from a season ago in the field (year-end No. 24 by Golfstat) and one of six top-100 teams competing.
Arkansas State (-11) holds the early lead by four shots over Jacksonville. Iowa, San Jose State and Campbell are also under par.
Ball State found itself as high as third in the middle of the round after a blistering finish to the front nine. Bronnenberg led the charge by making birdies on four straight holes before the turn, starting with the par-5 sixth. All five Cardinals in the lineup birdied No. 6.
Bronnenberg later birdied back-to-back holes at 15 and 16 to get to 3 under for the day. But the back nine proved more challenging for the Cardinals as a team, as the five BSU golfers combined to take 16 more shots than they did on the front.
Bronnenberg is tied for fourth place individually, three shots off the early pace set by Jacksonville's Thomas Thurloway with an opening 66.
Wiseman, back for his senior season after competing in this summer's U.S. Open, made five birdies of his own but saw an even-par round derailed with a triple bogey on his next-to-last hole. He rebounded with a birdie on the last to regain some momentum entering Monday's second round.
The Cardinals' first tee time Monday is set for 8:55 a.m. CT (9:55 ET). Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
