Early Goal Dooms Cardinals in 1-0 Loss at Eastern Kentucky
August 24, 2018 | Soccer
RICHMOND, KY. – The Ball State University soccer team played a solid 85 minutes but conceded an early goal in the fifth minute as it fell to Eastern Kentucky, 1-0, on Friday night at EKU Soccer Complex.
The Loss dropped BSU's record to 1-1-0 for the year while Eastern Kentucky improved to 2-1-0.
"We made a mistake early on that hurt us, but I felt the game was pretty even after that," said Ball State head coach Craig Roberts. "The last 20 minutes of the game we were able to kind of enforce our will, we just couldn't convert any chances. It was a good game for us to find out what we need to work on and how we can grow. I was proud of how resilient the girls were and how hard they played until the very end."
Despite the setback, the Cardinals outshot EKU 14-6 and had five shots on goal to the Colonels' four. BSU earned two more corners on the night and played without earning any yellow or red cards.
Allison Abbe and Emily Scott led the Ball State attack for the match with three shots apiece. Abbe put two shots on goal while Scott had one. Amanda Shaw recorded the other shot on frame on the night as one of her two shots. Goalkeeper Tristin Stuteville saved three of the four shots that she faced.
Eastern Kentucky started fast as Sarah Owusu beat Stuteville to a loose ball and kicked it home for the lone goal of the match. The Cardinals led in nearly every other statistical category for the remainder of the contest, but could not quite find the equalizer before the clock hit zero.
"The team learned how to battle tonight," Roberts said. "We saw a new style of play. We learned to be resilient and play until the final whistle. Hopefully we can learn from this and regroup on Sunday against a good Morehead State team."
The Cardinals will continue their Kentucky road trip with a visit to Morehead State on Sunday (Aug. 26). The match will kick off at 2:00 p.m.
