Volleyball Programs Earn AVCA Team Academic Award
July 23, 2018 | Men's Volleyball, Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State men's and women's volleyball programs were part of a record 973 teams to earn the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2017-2018 season. The previous record was 835 set last year.
Â
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball programs which display excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Â
On the women's side, the Cardinals finished the academic year with a 3.55 GPA led by a perfect 4.0 mark from redshirt junior middle/opposite Avery Devoe. In addition, sophomore libero Kate Avila and freshman setter Ali Finch earned 4.0 GPAs for the fall semester and junior setter Amber Seaman tallied a 4.0 GPA in the spring semester.
Â
"I am proud of how hard the team worked in the classroom this year," women's head coach Kelli Miller said. "We talk often about creating a culture of excellence, on and off the court, and I think it is evident that the team truly has bought in to this culture as we finished this past year with a 3.55Â team GPA and a MAC West Division championship. This team truly deserves this academic recognition, and I am very proud of their accomplishments."Â
On the men's side, the Cardinals finished the academic year with a 3.50 GPA led by a 3.939 mark by junior middle attacker Parker Swartz, who also finished the fall semester with a 4.0 GPA.
Â
"This is the third consecutive year our program has earned this award," men's head coach Joel Walton said. "With a cumulative GPA of 3.5 for the academic year, this is one of the highest GPAs our program has accomplished. The primary goal for every student-athlete should be to get an education. Achieving this award shows our guys understand that and are excelling in the classrooms at Ball State. I am very proud of my team for achieving this national honor."
