CHICAGO, Ill. - Former Ball State women's basketball center Renee Bennett has signed a contract to play for the WNBA's Chicago Sky. Â
"We are really proud of Renee and her accomplishments early in her pro career," said Ball State head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee.  "Last year's experience in the New York Liberty's camp will help her this year with the Chicago Sky. I know she will do whatever the Sky needs her to do to help their franchise."
Bennett made the training camp cut prior to signing her contract.  The training camp began Sunday, April 29 and included 18 players, 12 of whom were in attendance, including two-time WNBA All-Star center Stefanie Dolson, veteran guard Alex Montgomery, rookie Alaina Coates and forward Gabby Williams, who was recently selected by the team with the No. 4 overall pick in the WNBA Draft.
Bennett earned All-MAC First Team honors as a senior at Ball State in 2016-17. She played in 128 games over her Ball State career and started 80 of them.  Bennett became the 26th member of Ball State's 1,000-point club and finished her career 12th place on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,246 points.  She ranks second all-time in blocks (104) and 12th in rebounds (662) in school history.Â
Bennett started her senior season with back-to-back double-doubles, which hadn't happened for a Ball State player since 2009. She registered 10 double-doubles that season and 12 for her career.  Bennett scored a career-high 28 points against Oakland and Lipscomb in the 2016-17 season and pulled down a personal-best 15 rebounds at home against Bowling Green.  She scored in double figures in 30 of the Cardinals' 31 games her senior year, leading the team in scoring (17.5) and rebounding (8.1).
The Sky will play their first regular season game on the road on Saturday, May 19, against the Indiana Fever. The following night, the Sky will celebrate their inaugural season at Wintrust Arena with an event-filled home opener on Sunday, May 20. Tip-off against the New York Liberty is set for 6 p.m.
