MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's swimming and diving team is excited to announce the addition of three new athletes to the upcoming season's roster.
Abbie McCarter comes to Ball State to compete in the breaststroke and backstroke. The Rochester, Indiana native earned four varsity letters at Rochester High School. As a two-time captain, McCarter was named first-time all-conference as a sophomore, junior and senior. She was also team MVP three times and named all-sentinel all four years. McCarter's best time in the 100 breaststroke was set at the Indiana Senior State Meet where she earned sixth place. She also earned first place in that event in the sectional meet as a senior and sophomore. McCarter holds school records in the 100 breast, 100 back, 100 fly, 200 IM, 200 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 free relay. She was also a conference champion in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 IM. She also excels outside the pool, being a four year member of the honor roll and two years on the National Honor Society. She plans to be pre-dental when she attends Ball State in her first steps to becoming a dentist.
"From the moment I met Abbie, I could tell she had a positive outlook and open mind," head coach Kristy Patterson said. "She has a strong desire to continue training, and sees potential in herself to improve at Ball State. This shows her competitiveness, which is something our team needs. When she was here on her visit, she seemed to love everything about the university. I know that she will fit in well with our incoming class, as well as our returning athletes. Abbie is intelligent and will add to our strong team GPA. She basically fit all of our criteria. We can't wait for her to start in the fall!"
Katie Walker will come to Ball State to compete in distant free and fly. The Granger, Ind. native joins the team after earning four varsity letters at Riley High School. Walker, a one-time team captain, was all-conference all four seasons along with being named Academic All-State as a senior. She was also named team MVP. Walker helped her team to four city championships, three conference runner-ups, and three sectional runner-ups. With a 3.88 grade-point average, she was on the honor roll for four years and National Honor Society for two years. Walker intends to major in business while at Ball State.
"We started recruiting Katie in the fall semester, so we've had our eye on her for some time now," Patterson said. "It was an exciting time for me when she made the call to commit to our program! She has always been very cordial, well-spoken, and dedicated to her academics and swimming. It is clear to us that she will be one to watch over the next four years. She continued to improve throughout her senior season and finished strong at her high school state meet. It will be fun to coach someone with her energy and drive to always want to achieve more. Katie will mesh well with our mid distance and distance group, as well as our flyers."
Kayce Ingram will join the team in the fall as a walk-on. The four year letterwinner is a three-time all-conference honoree along with being named all-state (second and third teams) two times. As team captain her senior year, she finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke at sectionals. Ingram was also part of three sectional championships and one state-runner up. She also competed for Fishers Area Swimming Tigers club team for 12 years where she won both Open Water State and Senior State. Ingram is a four year member of the Honor Roll and will graduate with an honors diploma. She plans to major in health education and promotion at Ball State.
"We are excited to have Kayce join our program this fall," Patterson said. "She comes from a very sound training background, led by coach Joe Keller, who was a Ball State Cardinal himself. There's no doubt her background in the sport and high school and club program will help her as she continues at the collegiate level. Kayce will add depth in our mid distance IM, fly, and breaststroke events. We enjoyed getting to know her calm, positive, persistent personality through the recruiting process. I don't know if you will meet a more proud person to be a Ball State Cardinal!"
