Ball State Teams Continue Success in Latest NCAA APR Report

Men’s basketball posts best-ever average, women’s tennis maintains perfect 1,000
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Eight Ball State University athletic teams posted perfect scores of 1,000 for the 2016-17 academic year in the latest NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) report issued this week, highlighted by the women's tennis team achieving the mark for the fourth straight year.
Â
The recipient of an NCAA Public Recognition Award last week for ranking among the top 10 percent in APR for its sport, the women's tennis team maintains a perfect four-year rolling average of 1,000, the best of any Ball State program.
Â
But in the individual year of 2016-17, the latest reporting year, the Cardinals also registered scores of 1,000 in three men's sports -- basketball, tennis and volleyball -- and four additional women's sports -- cross country, gymnastics, swimming and volleyball.
Â
The score for the men's basketball program raised its four-year average to 981, its highest in the APR's history. The team's four-year score ranks second among all Mid-American Conference men's basketball programs, behind only Toledo. Meanwhile, the BSU women's tennis team is tied for first among its MAC peers.
Â
The APR numbers announced this week include data for the four-year period from 2013-14 through 2016-17. All 18 Ball State teams (indoor and outdoor track combined as one) easily cleared the four-year threshold average of 930 required to avoid penalties.Â
Â
BSU's average among all teams for the most recent four years is nearly 983. Six programs are at 990 or better during that stretch -- women's tennis (1,000), gymnastics (995), men's swimming (994), men's volleyball (991), cross country (990) and women's swimming (990).
Â
A total of 13 Ball State teams improved or maintained their four-year averages from the last report. The basketball programs made the largest jump, with the women's team climbing 25 points to 986 and the men's team moving up 24 points to reach its 981 mark. Both surpassed the four-year national average for their sport (982 for women and 967 for men).
Â
In terms of single-year scores, the baseball team made the biggest improvement of any BSU squad. It's 981 score for 2016-17 is 21 points higher that its previous single-year score. A total of 14 Cardinals teams matched or bettered their single-year score from the previous report. In addition to women's tennis, the gymnastics and men's tennis teams also posted single-year scores of 1,000 for the second consecutive year.
Â
The APR, now in its 13th year, provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. It accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
