UPDATE (May 23, 2018):
TAMPA, Fla. - - Due to weather concerns over the coming days, and after consultation with a local Tampa meteorologist, the decision has been made to adjust start times for majority of the events at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Championships in Tampa, FL.
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State track & field junior high jumper Regan Lewis continues her 2018 outdoor season next Thursday (May 24) when she travels to Tampa, Florida, for the NCAA East Preliminary Championships held at the USF Track & Field Stadium.
Â
Lewis, who has captured the last three Mid-American Conference high jump titles, enters the event tied as the 14th seed in the region after successfully clearing the bar at a height of 1.79m on two occasions this season.
Â
The first came in a second-place finish at the War Eagle Invitational (April 21) hosted by Auburn.
Â
The second came in a dominating performance at the MAC Outdoor Championships (May 12) when she won the competition by .15m after no other competitor was able to clear higher than 1.64m on the cold, blustery day in Buffalo, N.Y.
Â
Lewis will be making her second consecutive appearance in the high jump at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships which features the top 48 competitors in the region. The top 12 finishers from both the NCAA East and NCAA West Preliminary Championships advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon (June 6-9), with a jump off to break ties for the 12th spot if needed.
Â
A five-time MAC medalist in the high jump, Lewis is just the second Ball State student-athlete to compete in the high jump at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships, joining Rebecca Lomax who qualified three times (2011, 2012, 2015) after the championship format was changed following the 2009 season.
Â
Bonita Harrington is the last Ball State student-athlete to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the high jump, earning All-America honors in 1984 after tying for fourth in the event.
Â
Competition in the high jump at the USF Track & Field Stadium is set to begin at 5 p.m.
