Winbush Hopes to Hear His Named Called in NFL Draft
April 26, 2018 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – This is the most exciting time of the year for college football players hoping to get their shot in the professional ranks. Beginning tonight and going through Saturday, more than 250 players will hear their names selected by National Football League teams in the annual NFL Draft.
Ball State defensive end Anthony Winbush hopes his name is one of those selected by an NFL team this weekend. If so, he would be the first Cardinal picked in the NFL Draft since 2013 when the Indianapolis Colts took defensive end Jonathan Newsome in the fifth round. Newsome spent two years playing for the Colts before finding a spot in the Canadian Football League. He played the 2017 season for the Ottawa Redblacks.
A four-year contributor for the Cardinals, Winbush had a standout senior season this past fall. He ranked among the national leaders in sacks (11.5 – 4th), forced fumbles (5 – 1st) and tackles for loss (16.5 – 19th). In the season opener at Illinois, Winbush racked up a personal-high three sacks. On Nov. 16 against Buffalo, he equaled the Ball State career record for sacks (25).
Winbush was named to the All-Mid-American Conference first team in 2017 and also earned Ball State's John Magnabosco Award (most outstanding player).
Following the conclusion of the 2017 fall season, Winbush was one of nine Mid-American Conference football players invited to participate in the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine in February.
Of course, getting drafted does not guarantee success in the NFL. Former Ball State wide receiver Willie Snead recently agreed to a two-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens worth up to $10.4 million, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

The deal for new #Ravens WR Willie Snead: 2 years, $7M base, can be worth up to $10.4M in incentives. He gets a $2M signing bonus and an additional $1M base salary is guaranteed in 2018.
