April 13, 2018 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State football team has announced that former Cardinals Joey Lynch (2003-06) and Keith McKenzie (1992-95) will serve as the honorary captains at Saturday's Spring Football Game. Both Lynch and McKenzie are on the current coaching staff.
Lynch graduated as one of the most prolific passers in Ball State history with 4,292 yards, 37 touchdowns and a 63.8 career completion percentage. His completion percentage mark is still tops in the Ball State record book while his 37 touchdowns ranks fifth. Lynch tallied 23 starts at quarterback the Cardinals and served as team captain in his final year on the squad. He threw for a personal-high 397 yards at Central Michigan in 2004. As a senior in 2006, Lynch threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns against Indiana.
McKenzie was a standout on the defensive line for the Cardinals and earned All-MAC first team honors in 1995 after leading Ball State with 11 sacks and pacing the conference with 18 tackles for loss. He finished his Ball State career with 25 sacks, which is tied for the most in program history alongside Anthony Winbush (2014-17). McKenzie went on to play professionally in the National Football League for eight years with the Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills. He helped the Packers defeat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI.
Lynch has been a part of the Ball State coaching staff since 2009 and currently serves as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. McKenzie, the defensive line coach, is in his third year on the staff after spending eight years at Wayne State.
The annual Spring Football Game is slated begin Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
