Miles Strikes Out 14 to Guide Softball to 1-0 Win Over Niagara
March 04, 2018 | Softball
KISSIMMEE, FLA. - - Â Thanks to another dominating performance from Aeshia Miles, the Ball State softball team closed play in the Citrus Classic II with a 1-0 victory over Niagara Sunday morning at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Â
Miles followed up Friday's no-hitter versus Robert Morris with perhaps an even more dominating performance against the Purple Eagles (3-9), striking out a career-high 14 batters and retiring the side in order in five of the seven innings.
Â
Niagara's lone base runners; a leadoff walk in the second inning to ruin the perfect game and a fifth-inning two-out single to spoil the no-hitter.
Â
Prior to striking out 14 in Sunday's win to help the Cardinals improve to 11-5 on the year, Miles' previous career-high was six strikeouts in three different games.
Â
Behind Miles' performance, the Cardinals only needed one run in the contest, and they got it early.
Â
Sophomore left fielder Haley Dominique opened the bottom of the first with a bloop single to left and advanced to second when the Niagara fielder booted the ball towards the foul line.
Â
After a wild pitch moved Dominique to third, freshman shortstop Hailey Demnianiuk drew a walk to give Ball State runners on the corners. Demnianiuk proceeded to steal second, drawing a throw from the Purple Eagles catcher which allowed Dominique to swipe home for the lone run of the game.
Â
Ball State would also get hits from sophomore right fielder Kennedy Wynn and senior second baseman Maddy Labrador in the victory.
Â
With play complete in the Citrus Classic II, the Ball State softball team will have Monday to relax before returning to action Tuesday versus Virginia Tech (10 a.m.) and at UFC (3 p.m.). Both games will be played at UCF Softball Complex.
