Matt Walsh Earns MIVA Defensive Player of the Week Honor

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association announced Matt Walsh as this week's conference Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday morning. This marks his second player of the week honor this season.
The Cardinals took down Fort Wayne twice last week where Walsh totaled 15 blocks for 1.88 blocks per set. He was also able to add 18 kills for a .444 hitting percentage. Walsh finished the week with 26 points.
In the first matchup in Fort Wayne, Walsh had eight block assists and one solo block to help the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory. The Chicago native was also able to add 11 kills and two digs on the night.
Ball State then welcomed the Mastodons to Muncie on Saturday, where the Cardinals won in a sweep. In that contest the middle blocker racked up six block assists. He hit for .400 with seven kills.
Walsh is currently first in the conference and sixth nationally in blocks per set with 1.19. He is also ranked in both the conference and nationally in hitting percentage. With a season hitting percentage of .396 so far this season, Walsh is fifth in the MIVA and 10th in the country.
As for his career, he is also in the Ball State record books. Walsh sits second all-time (during rally scoring era) in both block assists (424) and total career blocks (471). He is also seventh with 47 solo blocks and ninth with 1,086 career points.
Walsh and the rest of the Ball State men's volleyball team will continue conference action this week with trips to No. 6 Loyola-Chicago and No.10 Lewis. The 11th ranked Cardinals take on Loyola on Thursday, March 22 and then will take on Lewis on Saturday, March 24.
