No. 21 Michigan Slips Past Softball in Final at Bat
March 10, 2018 | Softball
BOCA RATON, FLA. - - The Ball State softball team had No. 21/22 Michigan on the ropes, but its upset bid fell one run short as a pair of unearned runs helped the Wolverines (16-6) escape with a 3-2 victory in the Cardinals' (15-8) final game of the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament.
Behind yet another strong pitching performance from junior Aeshia Miles, Ball State limited Michigan to nine hits and three runs, only one of which were earned. Miles struck out five batters in the game, while issuing just one walk.
At the plate, sophomore first baseman Janae Hogg blasted her third home run in as many games, tying the score at 2-2 with a two-run blast in the sixth inning. Hogg also singled in the first to collect two of Ball State's four hits in the game.
The Cardinals threatened to break the game open early, as senior second baseman Maddy Labrador and Hogg tallied back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the first. Unfortunately, Michigan pitcher Meghan Beaubien responded with two of her 16 strikeouts in the game to keep the Cardinals off the board.
After Miles retired the Wolverines in order in the bottom of the first, freshman shortstop Hailey Demnianiuk led off the second with Ball State's third hit of the game. Once again, the Cardinals could not capitalize as three straight outs ended the inning.
Following a pair of scoreless innings, Michigan was able to take advantage of a Ball State error in the bottom of the third, scoring the game's first run. The leadoff batter reached base and advanced to second on a dropped throw at first. Two batters later, a single up the middle drove in the run.
Despite a spectacular try by freshman center fielder Katie Janiga, Michigan extended its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run. Janiga, running full steam from center to her right, got her glove on the ball but collided with the fence allowing the ball to fall over.
After Michigan retired 12 straight batters, sophomore left fielder Haley Dominique recovered from an 0-2 hole to draw a walk. Two batters later, Hogg's eighth home run of the season tied the score as pinch runner Cadie O'Donnell also came around to score.
Unfortunately, after being held off the board in the sixth, the Wolverines were able to plate the game-winning run with help from a second Ball State error and a two-out, bases loaded walk in the seventh.
The Ball State softball team returns to action Friday (March 16), when it opens play in the Belmont/Tennessee State Invitational with games at Belmont (4:30 p.m. ET / 3:30 p.m. CT) and vs. Rhode Island (9 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. CT).
