February 10, 2018 | Women's Basketball
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Ball State women's basketball team led the entire game and used a strong first half to earn an 81-71 road victory at Western Michigan Saturday afternoon in University Arena.
With the win, the Cardinals are now 20-4 overall and 9-4 in Mid-American Conference action. Sixth-year head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee becomes the only head coach in program history to have three straight 20 win seasons.
Senior forward Moriah Monaco led the Cardinals with a game-high 28 points. Freshman forward Oshlynn Brown collected her fourth-straight double-double after a 20 point, 11 rebound performance. Senior forward Destiny Washington rounded out the double digit scoring for Ball State with 13 points and junior guard Carmen Grande became the program's all-time assists leader with 630 career assists.
Monaco scored 16 points in the first half for the Cardinals off of 6-of-9 shooting from the field to help the Cardinals take a 42-28 lead over the Broncos at intermission. Grande made history in the second quarter of today's contest, as she dished out her 629th career assist to become the program's all-time assists leader at the 1:02 mark. Ball State's strong defensive game also played a factor in its 14-point halftime advantage over the Broncos.
Ball State carried its momentum into the third quarter as the Cardinals pushed their lead to 16 (32-48) with 7:20 on the clock which came off of a 3-poiner from senior guard Frannie Frazier. After that, the Broncos cut the lead to only four (52-48) late in the third frame. Back-to-back layups from Brown got the Cardinals rolling again but WMU continued to fight and would make it a 57-53 contest heading into the final stanza. Western Michigan outscored Ball State 25-to-15 in the third frame.
The Broncos would come to within four on two occasions in the final quarter, however that would be as close as WMU would get, as Brown and Monaco combined for 18 points to close out the game. Both Brown and Frazier also went 3-for-4 from the free throw line to help seal the win for the Cardinals.
After today's contest, the Ball State women's basketball team will have its open week from Mid-American Conference action and will resume play on Saturday at Northern Illinois. The game is set for a 2 p.m. tip off (EST) on ESPN3.
