November 25, 2018 | Women's Basketball
ESTERO, Fla. – The Ball State women's basketball team (1-5) suffered a heartbreaking, 69-66, loss to Quinnipiac (3-3) in its Gulf Coast Showcase finale Sunday afternoon at Germain Arena.
Entering the final period knotted up at 52, the Bobcats held Ball State scoreless for over a four-minute stretch, which proved to be the deciding factor.
Sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown led all scorers with 18 points while classmate guard Maliah Howard-Bass finished the game with 12. Senior guard Jasmin Samz rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Cardinals with 10.
In the game's first media timeout, Quinnipiac had jumped out to a quick 10-1 lead over Ball State. The Cardinals came back out onto the court playing more aggressively. Brown was found underneath the basket for two scores, sparking a 13-2 scoring spree to give Ball State the 14-12 lead over the Bobcats heading into the second frame.
The Cardinals led by eight on two different occasions in the second quarter, at the 9:14 mark (20-12) and with 6:37 on the clock (26-18). The Bobcats closed out the half with a 13-5 run to knot the game, 31-31, at intermission.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with each team trying to stay on top. Ball State led by two with 28 seconds to go, after Brown scored her 14th point of the contest, but Quinnipiac would knot the game for the fifth time to close out the quarter, 52-52.
The Cardinals opened the final frame with a 9-3 run to go up 61-55 over the Bobcats with 6:42 left in the contest. Quinnipiac answered with an 11-5 run of its own to tie the game at 66-66.
The Cardinals had possession with 38.4 seconds to go but Samz jumper at the top of the key wouldn't fall. Ball State closed the game sending Quinnipiac to the line twice, with the Bobcats only making 2-of-4 from the charity stripe it gave the Cardinals one last shot to tie or win the ball game, but Ball State would fall short.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns to Worthen Arena Wednesday at 7 p.m. as it welcomes Cincinnati to Muncie.
