Clephane Shines In WBB’s 75-63 Win Over Cincinnati

MUNCIE , Ind. – Ball State (2-5) used a 17-5 run in the second quarter to pull away from Cincinnati (5-3) in the Cardinals 75-63 win over the Bearcats Wednesday night in Worthen Arena.
The win over the Bearcats was the first for the Cardinals since the 1995-96 season when Ball State defeated Cincinnati, 76-73.
True freshman Anna Clephane led the Cardinals with a season best performance in points (22) and rebounds (9). Senior guard Nakeya Penny finished with 14 points after shooting 6-of-9 from the field and sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown matched Penny with a 14-point performance as well. Sophomore guard Maliah Howard-Bass wasn't too far behind Penny and Brown with 11 points.
The first period started as a tight affair between the Bearcats and the Cardinals, with five lead changes and five ties. Ball State began the second quarter with everything going its way, as the Cardinals went on a 9-0 scoring spree, which was capped off by a 3-pointer from Clephane.
Cincinnati, unable to respond to Ball State's 46 (6-13) percent shooting from the floor in the second frame, found itself trailing the Cardinals, 38-26, at the break. Clephane, Howard-Bass and Brown did most of the damage for the Cardinals in the first half, as the three combined for 29 of Ball State's 38 points.
The third and fourth quarter mimicked the end of the first half for the Cardinals. Ball State continued to control the tempo of the game shooting 54 (7-13) percent from the floor in the final frame. The closest Cincinnati came the remainder of the contest was 12 points and the most Ball State led by was 20 at the 4:02 mark in the third quarter.
The Ball State women's basketball team will play at in-state rival Butler Sunday in Hinkle Fieldhouse at 2 p.m.
