Shampton Scores In Field Hockey Loss To No. 17 Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Ball State field hockey team (2-14) wrapped up its weekend play with a 6-1 loss at No. 17 Northwestern (9-9) Sunday afternoon.
Northwestern came out strong offensively, scoring in both the 7:17 and 11:51 marks to start the game. Redshirt junior Michelle Shampton answered for the Cardinals, scoring her fourth goal of the season to put Ball State on the board with 23 minutes remaining in the first half.
Northwestern would then strike again right before intermission to put the Wildcats up 3-1 over the Cardinals at halftime.
After the break, the Wildcats rattled off three unanswered goals against the Cardinals defense to secure their victory.
For the game Shampton led the Cardinals with two shots and one goal. Shampton has now scored twice against a nationally ranked opponent this season for Ball State, her other goal came against No. 9 Louisville on Oct. 3. For her career, Shampton has totaled seven goals as a Cardinal.
Defensively, redshirt sophomore Grace Chavez led with nine saves. Chavez now has 116 saves this season and 190 for her career.
The Ball State field hockey team will host its last regular season game of the year Saturday in Mid-American Conference action against Longwood University at the Briner Sports Complex. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. ET start. The Cardinals will also recognize their seniors.
