Knouff, Tounalom Finish Top 15 to Lead Women’s Golf at Purgatory
October 15, 2018 | Women's Golf
Cardinals move up one spot on final day to finish 10th as a team
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- Ball State women's golfers Emily Knouff and Manon Tounalom turned in two of the better final rounds of anyone in the field Monday to climb into the top 15 on the final leaderboard at The Fall Preview.
Scores were tremendously elevated in the cold weather of the final round. After Purgatory Golf Club played to an average score of nearly 76.5 through the first 36 holes, the field's average Monday ballooned to 80.5.
Tounalom's 75 and Knouff's 76 were far better than average, leading Ball State to a team score of 314 for the day. Morgan Lewis was also steady with a 79, but the Cardinals were too far back to make a huge move. They climbed one spot into 10th place, two shots out of eighth, with a 54-hole total of 932 (+68).
It was a two-team race entering the final day, and overnight leader Xavier (+17) held off Toledo (+21) for a four-shot victory in the 12-team field. Toledo's Natcha Daengpiem (-4) maintained the top spot individually to claim medalist honors by three shots over Xavier's Mikayla Fitzpatrick and Central Michigan's Bria Colosky.
Only two players in the entire field posted better scores Monday than Tounalom's 75. She was the second-biggest mover of the day, climbing 18 spots to finish tied with Knouff for 15th place. Both players wrapped up the 54-hole event with scores of 227 (+11).
Knouff, a sophomore from Fort Loramie, Ohio, was better than the field average in each of the three rounds. She recorded the best 54-hole score and finish of her collegiate career.
The Fall Preview offered the opportunity for an advance look at a Purgatory venue that will host the MAC Championships in the spring. It was the fourth of five tournaments on Ball State's fall schedule. The Cardinals will play the final one Oct. 20-21 at Louisville's Cardinal Cup at The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky.
