Brown Records First Double-Double As WBB Downs Akron, 97-65

MUNCIE, Ind. - Freshman forward Oshlynn Brown recorded her first career double-double to help lead the Cardinals past Akron, 97-65, on Wednesday night in Worthen Arena. With the win, Ball State improves to 18-3 overall and 7-3 in Mid-American Conference play while Akron falls to 7-14 on the season and 1-9 in league action.
Brown finished the night with 11 rebounds and 16 points, just one shy of her career high. Senior forward Moriah Monaco scored in double figures for the 73rd time in her tenure after leading all scorers with a game high 22 points. Senior guard Frannie Frazier chipped in 14 points while teammates junior guard Jasmin Samz had 11 points and Carmen Granded ended the night with 10 points. It was the fifth time this season Ball State had five players reach double figures.
For the night, the one stat that stood out the most in the Cardinals win was points in the paint. Ball State outscored Akron 54-to-18 in that category.
The game began as a tight affair with both teams swapping baskets, totaling five lead changes. At the 7:20 mark, with the contest knotted at 7-7,the Cardinals started a 21-6 run over the remainder of the first quarter to take an impressive 28-13 lead over Akron heading into the second frame. Monaco started the game off solid, scoring 10 points off of 4-of-6 shooting from the field.
Ball State continued to keep the defensive pressure on in the second stanza, improving their lead to 20 points going into halftime, 49-29. The Cardinals found success from inside the paint, outscoring Akron 26-to-8. Ball State also shot a staggering 54.1 percent from the field (20-of-37) while holding Akron to 31.4 percent (11-of-35) from the floor.
The Cardinals had a slow start in the third quarter, allowing the Zips to go on a 12-5 run to cut Ball State's lead to 13 (54-41) at the media timeout. After the break, the Cardinals answered with an 8-3 scoring spree of their own to go back up by 18. Brown, Monaco and Samz led Ball State's offense during the run. The Cardinals closed the third frame strong and was able to push their lead to 27 (75-48) heading into the final stanza.
Ball State would not allow Akron to climb back in the fourth quarter, as the team continued to play well on both sides of the court. The Cardinals have now extended their win streak to four with tonight's victory over Akron.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues cross-divisional play when it heads to Ohio University Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff in the Convocation Center. The Cardinals own a 6-1 record this season when facing teams in the MAC East Division.
