The Ball State soccer team will close out a three-game road stretch Friday. But while last weekend called for a long trip to Texas, this week requires just a short jaunt down I-69. The Cardinals will play their final road game of non-conference play against in-state foe IUPUI.
Â
Ball State defeated the Jaguars 4-1 last season in Muncie. Current BSU players Sam Kambol (two goals) and Julia Elvbo (one) scored in that game, while Tristin Stuteville earned the win in net. The victory pushed the Cardinals record to 5-2-2 in the all-time series between the teams.
Â
IUPUI (3-3-0) enters this year's matchup coming off a pair of road wins last weekend in New York, defeating Manhattan and Wagner. The Jaguars have won three of their past four games, all by scores of 1-0. They are led by Valentine Pursey with two goals and two assists.
Â
Ball State (1-4-1) is coming off a pair of one-goal defeats on the road last weekend at Big 12 Conference opponents TCU and Baylor. The Cardinals acquitted themselves well on the trip, finishing strong in a 2-1 loss to the Horned Frogs and playing the Bears even through 77 minutes before falling 1-0.
Â
BSU has challenged itself in the non-conference schedule, playing three teams rated among the top 100 in the Hero Sports Division I rankings -- Notre Dame (16), TCU (48) and Baylor (85). Notre Dame and TCU were NCAA tournament teams a year ago.
Â
Junior forward Amanda Shaw scored Ball State's goal in last weekend's game at TCU. She became the fourth different Cardinal to score a goal this year, joining Kambol, Evie Stepaniak and Emily Scott.
Â
The Ball State defense along with goalkeepers Stuteville, Alyssa Heintschel and Madison Lockard is allowing 1.5 goals per game and has surrendered more than one goal only twice so far.
