Volleyball’s Offense Struggles in 3-0 Loss at Toledo
September 28, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
TOLEDO, Ohio - - The Ball State women's volleyball team could not find its offensive rhythm Thursday night, suffering a 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-16) loss to Toledo in Mid-American Conference play at Savage Arena.
In an uncharacteristically off night, the Cardinals (10-6; 2-1 MAC) offense was limited to a season-low .074 (38-28-135) attack percentage by a Rockets (6-9; 1-2 MAC) defense which accumulated 11.0 team blocks.
One bright spot for the Ball State offense was the play of senior opposite Jessica Lindsey (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) who tied her season high with seven kills over the final two sets. Lindsey also led Ball State's attackers with a .294 ( 7-2-17) attack percentage and was credited with two digs and two block assists.
Junior outside Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) reached double digit kills for the third consecutive match, leading the Ball State offense with 11 markers. She also collected four digs in the loss.
Rounding out Ball State's top contributors on offense was sophomore middle Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind./Illiana Christian) who smashed nine kills and hit .261 (9-3-23).
On defense, sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) led all players with 20 digs. It's the fourth time this season and the 13th time in her career Avila has logged 20-or-more digs in a match.
Sophomore setter Amber Seaman (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebeuf) also notched double figure digs with 12, while handing out 35 assists for her team-leading ninth double-double of the season.
Toledo's Saige Thomas led all players with 15 kills, while Marissa Leonard collected a team-high 18 digs. As a team, the Rockets connected for a .217 (39-14-115) attack percentage on the night.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will look to rebound Saturday, when it opens the home portion of its 2017 MAC slate with a scheduled 7 p.m. first serve versus Buffalo. The match will be carried live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
