September 23, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team showed tremendous poise late in the final two sets and it payed off in the form of a 3-0 (25-18, 33-31, 26-24) sweep at Mid-American Conference rival Central Michigan Saturday evening inside McQuirk Arena.
Â
With the win, the Cardinals (10-5; 2-0 MAC) improve to 2-0 in league play for the third straight season. They are also one of only three undefeated MAC programs after the league's opening weekend. The other two; MAC West Division rival Western Michigan and next Saturday's opponent Buffalo out of the MAC East Division.
Â
After the last three matches between the Cardinals and the Chippewas (9-5; 1-1 MAC) went five sets, all three Ball State wins, tonight's contest was shaping up to be much the same. However, the Cardinals were able to hold off late charges from CMU to win the second and third sets in overtime and escape Mount Pleasant with a 3-0 sweep.
Â
For the second straight night, it was a solid all-around effort from junior outside Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) which paved the way for the Ball State victory, as she collected her second consecutive double-double with a match-high 16 kills and 15 digs. She also served up three of the Cardinals' six aces, and added a pair of block assists, to finish the match with an even 20.0 points.
Â
Junior Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland)Â also turned in another solid attacking performance, smashing 12 kills and leading Ball State's primary attackers with a .355 (12-2-31) hitting percentage. She also finished the night with two solo blocks and a pair of block assists.
Â
In addition to guiding the Ball State offense to a .302 (47-12-116) attack percentage, sophomore setter Amber Seaman (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebeuf) came up big from the service line by depositing a pivotal ace to end the second set 33-31 in favor of the Cardinals. Overall, she dished out 38 assists, collected five digs, smashed three kills, served up two aces, and came up with a solo block in an all-around solid performance.
Â
Rounding out Ball State's top contributors on offense was junior opposite Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison) who chipped in eight kills and combined with redshirt junior middle Meg Starling (Hopkinsville, Ky./University Heights) for the match-ending block assist.
Â
Speaking of Starling, she led the Ball State defense with five total blocks and also scored four kills.
Â
In the backcourt, sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) led all players with 16 digs, while defensive specialist Lauren Schreiner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) scored 11 to give Ball State three players with double-digit digs on the night.
Â
Overall, Ball State held a 58-to-54 advantage in digs and a 9.0-to-7.0 edge in blocks, which helped limit the Central Michigan offense to a .190 (49-23-137) attack percentage.
Â
Miani Bolden led the Chippewas with 13 kills on the night, while Jordan Bueter and Emily Wenglikowski tied for team-high honors with 13 digs apiece.
Â
After starting the season 0-4 in true road matches, the Ball State women's volleyball team will look to pick up its third consecutive road win Thursday (Sept. 28) when it visits league travel partner Toledo for a 7 p.m. first serve at Savage Arena.
Â
The Cardinals then return to Worthen Arena for their first home match of the MAC season, a 7 p.m. start versus Buffalo on Saturday (Sept. 30). Both matches will be carried live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
