Volleyball Opens MAC Play with 3-1 Win at Eastern Michigan
September 22, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
YPSILANTI, Mich. - - Led by a strong effort on the outside and a stellar team defensive performance, the Ball State women's volleyball team opened Mid-American Conference play with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 29-27) victory over Eastern Michigan Friday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
Leading the charge for the Cardinals (9-5; 1-0 MAC) on offense was junior outside Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) who registered a season-high 20 kills, one shy of her career high. It also marked the third time in her career Goodsel has smashed at least 20 kills in a match.
Also turning in a strong performance on the outside was junior Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) who finished the afternoon with a season-high 19 kills, three shy of her career-best performance.
Another key to the Cardinals victory over the Eagles (8-9; 0-1 MAC) Friday afternoon was the play of the team's backcourt which saw five players tally double figure digs, led by a career-high 19 digs from junior defensive specialist Lauren Schreiner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North).
Overall, the Cardinals held an 89 to 75 advantage in team digs, while limiting the Eastern Michigan attack to a .189 (55-22-175) rate of success. Ball State's 89 total digs were a season high, and the most in a four-set match for the Cardinals since a 94-dig effort Nov. 11, 2011 in a 3-1 victory over Eastern Michigan in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Tournament.
In addition to her solid attacking, Goodsel was just as strong on defense, collecting a season-best 17 digs for her second double-double of the season.
Sophomore setter Amber Seaman (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebeuf) earned her eighth double-double of the season by dishing out a season-high 55 assists to go along with 12 digs. Overall, Seaman guided the Ball State offense to a .191 (63-28-183) rate of success against an EMU squad which entered the match ranked seventh in the nation with 144.0 total blocks.
Also logging double-digit digs for the Cardinals were sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) and freshman defensive specialist Grace Nelson (Bennington, Neb./Elkhorn) with 13 and 12, respectively.
In addition to Goodsel and Dunn, junior opposite Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison) chipped in double-digit kills with 11 on the day. She also secured three block assists and five digs, while hitting .219 (11-4-32).
Redshirt junior middle Meg Starling (Hopkinsville, Ky./University Heights) added eight kills and a .333 (8-1-21) attack percentage, to go along with a team-high four total blocks and a career-high seven digs.
Nelson and Schreiner led Ball State from the service line with two aces apiece, while Seaman and Starling each served up one.
Franki Strefling and Jordan Smith led the Eastern Michigan offense with 13 kills apiece, while Alyssa LaFace recorded a team-high 18 digs.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will look to improve to 2-0 in MAC play for the third consecutive season when it travels to Central Michigan for an 8 p.m. first serve Saturday (Sept. 23) at McGuirk Arena.
