Volleyball Claims Active Ankle Challenge Title with Sweep of Fort Wayne
September 02, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to five matches with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-22) sweep of in-state rival Fort Wayne Saturday night to claim the 2017 Ball State Active Ankle Challenge title at Worthen Arena.
Â
In improving to 5-1 on the year, the Cardinals are off to their best start since the 2011 squad won its first nine matches. In addition, the team's five-match winning streak ties as the program's longest since an 11-match run from Sept. 7 to Sept. 28, 2013.
Â
"Our serving pressure and blocking presence were really strong again tonight," second-year head coach Kelli Miller said. "However, I give Fort Wayne a lot of credit. They were scrappy, took big swings and kept us off balance most of the night. Luckily, our veteran players stepped up their play after point 20 and were dialed in when it mattered the most."
Â
In all three sets, the Mastodons (3-4) held their own against the Mid-American Conference's top attacking team and limited the Cardinals to a .181 (38-17-116) rate of success for the night.
Â
Fort Wayne held a 21-19 advantage in the opening set, only to see the Cardinals score the final seven points in a run which including three blocks. Junior outside Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) provided the final marker with a solo block. She would go on to finish the match with eight kills, eight digs and two total blocks.
Â
Goodsel was named the Most Valuable Player of the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge after leading the Cardinals offense with 43 kills for a 4.30 kills-per-set average over the two-day event. She also tied for team-high honors with four aces on the weekend, while collecting 24 digs and a pair of blocks.
Â
The teams played to a 19-19 stalemate in the second set, before a kill from redshirt junior middle Meg Starling (Hopkinsville, Ky./University Heights) and a block assist from Goodsel and junior middle Avery Devoe (Canton, Mass./Canton) sparked a 6-0 set-ending run. Starling finished the day with four kills and two blocks, while Devoe earned two kills and two total blocks.
Â
The teams played to another 19-19 stalemate in the third set before junior outside Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) made her presence known with a kill and solo block. Dunn would add another of her eight kills on the day to make the score 22-20, while a Starling blast ended the match at 25-22.
Â
Dunn would be named to the Active Ankle Challenge All-Tournament Team after finishing the event ranked second on the team with 34 kills for a 3.40 kills-per-set average. She was also credited with seven total blocks, including four solo blocks, and four digs over the course of the tournament.
Â
Rounding out Ball State's all-tournament team selections was junior opposite Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison) who led the Ball state offense with nine kills and hit .353 (9-3-17) in the sweep of Fort Wayne. For the tournament, Holland average 2.20 kills and 1.00 blocks per set, while connecting for a .320 (22-6-50) rate of success.
Â
In the backcourt, sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) led the Ball State defense with 13 digs. Sophomore setter Amber Seaman (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf) added 10 digs, while dishing out a 29 assists for her fifth consecutive double-double. She also smashed four kills and served up an ace.
Â
Nicole Rightnowar had the best all-around match for the Mastodons, leading the team with match-highs of 11 kills and 14 digs. Overall, the Ball State defense limited the Fort Wayne attack to a season-low .052 (33-27-115) rate of success.
Â
It will be a quick turnaround for the Ball State women's volleyball team which travels to IUPUI Tuesday for a 7 p.m. first serve at The Jungle.
