Starling Shines Bright in Five Set Loss at IUPUI
September 05, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - Despite a career performance from redshirt junior middle Meg Starling (Hopkinsville, Ky./University Heights), the Ball State women's volleyball team suffered a 3-2 (18-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-8) setback to IUPUI Tuesday night in non-conference action at The Jungle.
Â
Starling led the Cardinals (5-2) offense with a career-high 15 kills and hit an astonishing .700 (15-1-20) for the match. Her .700 attack percentage ties as the 12th-best single match performance in program history for a player with at least 15 attempts. In addition, it's ties as the second-best individual performance under such stipulations in the 25-point rally scoring era (2008-present).
Â
Starling also had a solid match on defense, collecting a team-high five total blocks and tying her career high with two digs.
Â
After pulling away late in a 25-18 opening set victory and jumping out to a 20-13 advantage to open the second, the Cardinals seemingly ran out of momentum as the host Jaguars (3-5) rallied to tie the score at 23-23. However, sophomore middle Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind./Illiana Christian) came up with a huge kill and sophomore defensive specialist Anna Jensen (Carmel, Ind./Indianapolis Cathedral) came off the bench to serve up a frame-winning ace.
Â
Ball State went on to score the first three points of the third set, only to see the host Jaguars come to life and capture the final three sets.
Â
Junior outside attacker Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) was the only other Ball State player to score double digit kills Tuesday, finishing the night with 12. She also recorded eight digs for the fourth consecutive match, to go along with a pair of blocks.
Â
Junior opposite Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison) added nine kills and a .333 (9-3-18) attack percentage, while freshman Kia Holder (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) smashed a career-high eight kills and was credited with a career-best six digs.
Â
In the backcourt, sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) led all players with 18 digs, while junior defensive specialist Lauren Schreiner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) collected 14. Overall, the Ball State defense held a 75 to 61 advantage in digs for the match.
Â
Gabby Fisher led the IUPUI offense with 20 kills, while Jessica Helms logged a team-high 13 digs.
Â
It will be another quick turnaround for the Ball State women's volleyball team which opens play in the Colorado State University Tournament Friday with a 2 p.m. ET / Noon MT first serve against the 25th-ranked and tournament host Rams.
Â
The Cardinals will also play Idaho State (10 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. MT) on Friday, before closing the event Sunday against No. 16 Michigan (Noon ET / 10 a.m. MT).
