Volleyball’s Comeback Bid Falls Short at Butler
September 16, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - For a moment, it looked like the Ball State women's volleyball team was going to pull off its second consecutive come-from-behind five set victory. Unfortunately, it was not in the cards Saturday night at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse as host Butler held on for a hard-fought 3-2 (25-15, 25-12, 22-25, 19-25, 15-6) victory to claim the first-ever Ball State & Butler Tournament title.
Much like Friday's match versus Duquesne, the Cardinals (8-5) found themselves trailing by two sets at the intermission. Once again, Ball State came out on fire, winning sets three and four to force a decisive fifth frame. However, the host Bulldogs (10-2) would not be denied their seventh consecutive victory, as they won the fifth frame 15-6 to take the match 3-2.
It was another big offensive turnaround which helped spearhead the comeback attempt, as sophomore setter Amber Seaman (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebeuf) entered the match late in the second set and guided the Ball State offense to a .339 (28-7-62) attack percentage in the two set wins. Unfortunately, the Cardinals could not carry over the momentum in the final set, hitting .000 (5-5-25).
Seaman finished the night with team-highs of 28 assists and three blocks (one solo and two assists). She also served up one of the team's two aces, while adding a kill.
Sophomore middle Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind./Illiana Christian) also played a large role in helping the Cardinals claim sets three and four, finishing the match with a career-high tying 13 kills, seven of which came in Ball State's two set victories. She also factored in two of the Cardinals' four blocks on the night.
Freshman outside hitter Kia Holder (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) continued her strong play off the bench, finishing second on the team with nine kills. Senior outside Jessica Lindsey (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) added six kills off the bench, while junior middle Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison) finished the night with seven.
Rounding out Ball State's top contributors on offense was redshirt junior middle Avery Devoe (Canton, Mass./Canton) who hit a team-high .714, with five kills and no errors in seven attempts.
In the backcourt, junior outside Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) and sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) tied for team-high honors with 14 digs apiece.
Anna Logan and Whitney Beck led the Butler attack with 14 kills apiece, while Rachel Schultz collected a team-high 22 digs. Overall, Butler held a 69-to-59 advantage in digs, a 12.5-to-4.0 edge in team blocks and a .264-to-.135 attacking advantage in the match.
For their efforts over the three-day tournament which saw three matches played at Ball State and three matches played at Butler, Holland and Avila were named to the all-tournament team for the Cardinals.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will look to rebound from tonight's loss Friday (Sept. 22), when it opens Mid-American Conference play with a scheduled 3 p.m. first serve at Eastern Michigan. The Cardinals are then slated to play an 8 p.m. match at Central Michigan Saturday (Sept. 23).
