Soccer Drops 1-0 Affair at Xavier
August 25, 2017 | Soccer
CINCINNATI -- The Ball State soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision Friday evening to Big East foe Xavier at the XU Soccer Complex.
The Cardinals (1-2-0) will return to Muncie to host Appalachian State on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at the Briner Sports Complex.
Xavier's Samantha Dewey scored the only goal of Friday's game in the 28th minute. She slipped past the Ball State defense and deflected her shot in off the crossbar.
"It was a poor start defensively for us," Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. "They came with a strong game and a lot of enthusiasm, but we didn't perform like we can at the start and that cost us. We have to make sure we come out sparks blazing and make sure we play a complete game."
Ball State out-shot Xavier (2-1-0) by a 16-11 margin and finished with eight shots on goal but could not get one past Musketeer keeper Toni Bizzarro. Evie Stepaniak registered a team-high four shots, while Amanda Shaw and Sam Kambol logged three.
The Cardinals applied especially heavy pressure in the 34th minute. But Bizzarro saved looks from Peighton Cook and Shaw, and an attempt by Allison Abbe was deflected. BSU created some chances in the second half, as well, including a couple by Kambol.
Bizzarro finished with eight saves for Xavier to keep the clean sheet. Alyssa Heintschel made five saves for the Cardinals with only the deflection off the cross bar getting past her.
"We're going to have a target on us this year, and we have to make sure we play to that standard," Roberts said. "Anything less won't be good enough. It's about how we respond now to make sure we're taking care of what we need to do."
Ball State, which lost last Sunday at Notre Dame, has now posted back-to-back defeats for the first time since early last season. The Cardinals responded to that situation by going on a school-record 10-game unbeaten streak.
