August 25, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team opened play in the Indiana Invitational with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-14) setback to in-state rival and tournament host Indiana Friday evening at University Gym.
The Cardinals (0-1) continue play in the two-day event Saturday, starting with a 10 a.m. showdown versus another in-state rival in Indiana State. Ball State concludes the tournament later in the day with a scheduled 5 p.m. first serve against DePaul.
Junior opposite Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison) led the Ball State offense in Friday's loss to the Hoosiers (1-0), scoring six kills and a .308 (6-2-13) attack percentage. She also recorded a pair of blocks, including a solo stuff.
Junior middle Meg Starling (Hopkinsville, Ky./University Heights) came on strong in the final set, scoring three of her four kills and earning a pair of solo blocks in the final frame. She finished the night with 6.5 total points, including a block assist for a team-high three total blocks.
Rounding out Ball State's top attackers was junior outside Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) with six kills. She also earned five digs and a service ace, while leading the Cardinals' primary passers with a perfect reception percentage on 15 attempts.
Indiana, which out-hit the Cardinals .320 to .120 for the night, was led by Kendall Beerman's 13 kills. She also paced all players with 12 digs to earn her first double-double of the season.
Sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) led Ball State's backcourt players with eight digs, while adding a service ace.
After not holding a lead for the entire 24-13 opening set loss, the Cardinals scored the first point of the second frame and played to a 19-14 advantage. Unfortunately, Beerman shifted the momentum back to the hosts with a kill and back-to-back aces. Indiana went on to win the closest frame of the night 25-22.
The teams opened the third set by trading four-point runs, with a solo block from Starling tying the score at 4-4. That was as close as the Cardinals would get; however, as the Hoosiers scored the next five points and won the set 25-14.
