August 26, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team used a dominating offensive performance to score a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 27-25) sweep of in-state rival Indiana State Saturday morning in its first of two matches on the day at the Indiana Invitational played at Indiana's University Gym.
The Cardinals (1-1), who hit .315 (50-15-111) as a team and had four players smash double digit kills, conclude the two-day event at 5 p.m. tonight versus DePaul.
Perhaps the biggest contributions in Saturday morning's win over the Sycamores (1-1) came from junior middle Meg Starling (Hopkinsville, Ky./University Heights) who blasted a career-high 10 kills and added three solo blocks on her way to tying for match-high honors with 13.5 points.
Junior outside hitter Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) led all players with 12 kills and finished the match with a .423 (12-1-26) attack percentage. The effort marks the third-best hitting performance of her collegiate career. She also scored a solo block and six digs in the victory.
Rounding out Ball State's top attackers against the Sycamores were junior Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) and sophomore Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ill./Illiana Christian) who finished the match with 10 kills apiece.
In leading the Ball State attack to a .315 attack percentage, sophomore setter Amber Seaman (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf) collected her 14th career double-double with 38 assists and a team-high 15 digs. She also scored three kills of her own, while adding a service ace and solo blocks.
Sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) was second on the Ball State squad with 14 digs, marking the 30th time in her collegiate career Avila has recorded double figure digs in a match.
Lindsey Wilkins led the Indiana State attack with nine kills, while Laura Gross collected a team-high 11 digs. Overall, the Ball State defense limited the Sycamores attack to a .215 (37-14-107) attack percentage.
With the score of the opening set tied at 7-7, a kill from Goodsel and a solo block from Starling gave the Cardinals the momentum, as they pulled ahead 18-11 and went on to win the frame 25-19.
Trailing 13-11 in the second set, the Cardinals rattled off four straight points to pull ahead for good in the set. Ball State led 23-21 late, and used back-to-back kills from sophomore opposite Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison) and Dunn to close out the frame.
With the score of the third set tied at 21-21, the Cardinals would reach match point with three straight markers. However, the Sycamores battled back to even the score at 24-24. Ball State had a fourth match point at 25-24 after a kill from Seaman, but a service error extended the match for two more points.
Goodsel followed with her match-high 12th kill of the night, while Holland made good on the Cardinals' fifth-match point attempts with her fifth kill of the morning to end the set at 27-25 and the match at 3-0.
